Northern California offers some of the most spectacular road trip destinations in the country — the redwoods of the North Coast, the volcanic landscapes of Lassen, the dramatic Mendocino coast, or simply a long weekend in the Sierra Nevada. But an unexpected breakdown on a remote stretch of Highway 1 or deep in the mountains can quickly turn an adventure into a nightmare.
A pre-trip vehicle inspection is the single most important thing you can do before a long drive. Here's the complete checklist our team at Hahn Automotive uses to prepare vehicles for road trips throughout Northern California and beyond.
The Essential Pre-Road-Trip Vehicle Checklist
Engine Oil
Check your oil level and condition. If you're within 1,000–2,000 miles of your next oil change interval, change it before the trip. Running an oil change slightly early is far better than running low on oil while climbing a mountain pass with a full car. Schedule an oil change before your departure.
Coolant Level and Condition
Extended highway driving and mountain grades create sustained high engine temperatures. Verify your coolant reservoir is at the proper level. If your coolant hasn't been changed in the last 2–3 years, consider a flush before a long trip — especially if you'll be traveling through mountainous terrain.
Brake Inspection
This is non-negotiable. Mountain driving means significant brake usage on descents. Have your brakes inspected before any trip involving significant elevation changes. Check pad thickness, rotor condition, and brake fluid condition. Brake fluid absorbs moisture over time, lowering its boiling point — overheated, moisture-contaminated brake fluid on a long descent is dangerous.
Tire Inspection and Pressure
Tires are your only contact with the road. Before a long trip:
- Check pressure in all four tires AND the spare (cold pressure, before driving)
- Inspect tread depth — use the quarter test (if you can see Washington's head, tires are marginal)
- Look for sidewall bulges, cracks, or uneven wear patterns
- Verify the spare is properly inflated and the jack and lug wrench are in the vehicle
Battery
A battery that barely starts your car at home may fail completely in cold mountain temperatures or after a long day of driving with AC running. Have your battery tested if it's over 3 years old — a battery load test takes minutes and can tell you whether your battery is near end of life.
All Fluid Levels
Before your trip, check:
- Power steering fluid (if applicable)
- Brake fluid
- Transmission fluid
- Windshield washer fluid (easy to forget, annoying to run out of on a dusty road)
Belts and Hoses
A visual inspection of serpentine belts and coolant hoses can catch obvious issues. Look for cracking, fraying, glazing on belts, and soft spots or bulging on hoses. A belt failure on the highway disables your alternator, power steering, and AC simultaneously — potentially catastrophic in remote areas.
Lights
Walk around the car and verify all lights are functioning: headlights (high and low), taillights, brake lights, turn signals, and hazard lights. Ask someone to stand behind the vehicle while you test brake lights and reverse lights if you're checking alone.
Emergency Items to Carry
- Jumper cables or a portable jump starter
- Basic tool kit (pliers, screwdrivers, zip ties, duct tape)
- Flashlight with fresh batteries
- Reflective triangles or road flares
- First aid kit
- Water and a blanket (for remote travel)
- Your roadside assistance information
